Calne Town Lock

At the end of the Wharf, turn left to cross the bridge. Then turn right to follow the river. Go over the two bridges into Castlefields Park. The ‘Jubiliee Queen’, a replica canal boat, is at the site of Calne Town Lock.

The lock formerly on the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal is part of Calne's industrial heritage. It has been restored by volunteers.

The landscape artist, William Westall, was taught to draw by his elder half-brother Richard, who later taught painting to the future Queen Victoria. In 1830, William visited Calne to produce one of his most endearing drawings, showing St Mary’s church seen from the canal lock amidst cattle and people going about their business.
