Calne had many watermills in the past: as many as 9 were mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Fulling mills “fulled” or finished woollen cloth by scouring and thickening it by battering with hammers raised and dropped by the turning of a water wheel. Corn mills ground grain into flour by crushing between rotating mill stones. This corn mill stopped milling in 1966.
